Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar

Savour authentic Mongolian cuisine alongside international fare at their restaurants. Guest can unwind at the CHI, The Spa, take a dip in the indoor pool and experience Shangri-La hospitality amidst Mongolia’s vibrant culture. Shangri-La Hotel, Ulaanbaatar is within walking distance of the famous Government House, Great Chinggis Khaan Square, and the main offices and embassies. Chinggis Khan International Airport is just about a 40-minute drive away, and the train station is only about 20 minutes away by car.
The hotel features 290 elegant and spacious guestrooms, each at least 42 sqm, and a contemporary and Indigenous fusion design. All guest rooms and suites overlook either Nayramdal Park to the south or Great Chinggis Khaan Square and panoramic vistas of the city to the north.
Below is my experience based on a stay at the property.
My arrival experience: Warmly welcomed by the management, including the General Manager, and then escorted to the room.
What I liked: Surprisingly great service and the feeling of a brand-new hotel. I stayed here only a few days after the official opening.
What about the food? Impressive breakfast with high-quality local and imported food in the buffet including French cheeses.
What about the service? Surprisingly great service. A good combination of well-trained locals and professional expats. Actually, it was a lot better than most Shangri-La hotels I have stayed in and really a joy to experience.
What about the rooms: It is a beautiful new room with a comfortable bed, a separate sitting area, a working desk, a flatscreen TV, and a separate shower from the bathtub. Complimentary high-speed internet access is a big plus, especially as I expected it to be slow in a country like Mongolia. The only thing I didn’t like was Shangri-La’s self-branded products in the bathroom. It’s probably the worst of any chain, so I recommend bringing your own. This is a brand standard and not something I think the Ulaanbaatar property can change. It is the only negative point of a fantastic room for both business and leisure travellers.
Number of rooms: 290.
Type of property: City hotel.
Location: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Facilities: The hotel has just opened, so some of the facilities are not operational yet. In the future, there will be a swimming pool, health club, and business/meeting facilities. According to their website, “Starting from September 2015, other services and facilities, including a Jacuzzi, sauna, and steam bath, will be available at the Health Club.”
Complimentary internet: Yes, and fast. Complimentary in-room internet is one of Shangri-La’s signatures.
My overall impression: It was a great experience. It is much better than I thought it would be. Very impressive.
