Hotel Pacai, Vilnius
Vilnius is one of those European capitals that can still feel like a discovery. The Old Town has beautiful Baroque architecture, cobbled streets and grand churches, but it also has plenty of quiet corners, independent restaurants and small streets where you can simply wander without a plan. In the middle of it all is Hotel Pacai, one of the city’s most distinctive places to stay.
The hotel is located on Didžioji Street, right in the historic centre of Vilnius. From here, many of the city’s main sights are within easy walking distance, making it a particularly convenient base for exploring the Old Town. You can step outside and immediately find yourself surrounded by centuries-old buildings, cafés and restaurants.
What makes Hotel Pacai interesting, however, is not simply its location. The hotel occupies the historic Pacai Palace, a building with roots going back several centuries. Rather than trying to hide the age of the property, the design combines historic details with a contemporary interior.
There is a nice contrast between the old architecture and the modern furnishings. Stone walls, high ceilings and historic details sit alongside clean lines, comfortable furniture and understated colours. It feels sophisticated without becoming overly formal.
My room had the sort of atmosphere I appreciate when travelling: comfortable and calm, with enough space to relax after spending several hours walking around a city. The design is modern but doesn’t feel generic, which is important in a historic property like this. There are also different room and suite categories, including options with more space for longer stays.
One of the nicest things about staying here is simply being able to walk out of the hotel and explore Vilnius on foot. The Old Town is compact enough that you can spend hours wandering between churches, courtyards and small streets without constantly needing transport.
A short walk takes you towards some of the city’s most recognisable sights, while the Užupis district is also within walking distance. Vilnius Cathedral and Gediminas Castle are easy to reach, and there are countless cafés and restaurants nearby.
After a day exploring, returning to Hotel Pacai feels quite different from staying in a modern business hotel on the outskirts of a city. The historic surroundings give the stay a stronger sense of place. You are not simply sleeping in Vilnius; you are staying inside part of its history.
The hotel also has a restaurant and bar, making it possible to have a relaxed evening without having to go back out into the city. The atmosphere is elegant but not excessively formal, and the historic setting gives the dining areas some character.
Another feature worth mentioning is the hotel’s spa. After a long day of walking through Vilnius, having somewhere to slow down for a while can make a difference. It adds another dimension to the property and makes Hotel Pacai suitable not only for sightseeing trips but also for a more relaxed city break.
Vilnius itself is becoming increasingly interesting for travellers looking for European cities that offer a lot without the prices and crowds found in some of the continent’s better-known capitals. The Old Town has plenty of character, restaurants are generally affordable compared with Western Europe, and English is widely spoken in hotels and restaurants.
Hotel Pacai works especially well because it matches the character of the city. It has history, but the interiors don’t feel stuck in the past. It is luxurious without being flashy, and its central location means you can experience much of Vilnius simply by walking out of the front door.
If you are visiting Vilnius for the first time and want to stay somewhere with a strong connection to the city rather than a standard international hotel environment, Hotel Pacai is an appealing option. The combination of a historic palace, contemporary design, a central location and the atmosphere of Vilnius’ Old Town makes it a memorable place to base yourself while exploring the Lithuanian capital.
