Archive article. Set just outside the laid-back town of Santa Maria, Hotel Meliá Tortuga offers a polished base for exploring Cape Verde’s windswept charm. The property sits about a ten-minute drive from the centre, close enough for convenience yet far enough to feel removed from the busier stretches of Sal Island.

With 271 rooms, the hotel leans into a contemporary style that feels clean and practical rather than overly luxurious. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the inclusion of both a bathtub and a separate shower adds a small but appreciated touch of functionality. As part of the Meliá Hotels International portfolio, the hotel carries the familiar rhythm of a well-run chain—efficient, predictable, and generally smooth in its execution.

The guest mix is largely European, many arriving via charter packages, which explains the strong emphasis on the all-inclusive concept. While that style of travel isn’t always appealing, the experience here is solid. The food is decent, and the service is consistently friendly without feeling forced.

One of the standout features is the beach. Compared to the more crowded sands of Santa Maria, this might be a better option and a highlight for many guests of a stay.

There are, however, small drawbacks. Charging for internet access feels outdated (this was back in 2012 when I stayed) and disappointing, but I don’t know if this changed later on. Still, taken as a whole, the hotel delivered a genuinely enjoyable stay. It may not measure up to five-star expectations in more competitive destinations with mass tourism, but on Sal Island at the time, I think it would be difficult to find something much better.
