La Sultana Marrakech

La Sultana Marrakech is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) and offers an intimate stay with just 28 rooms and suites. Having stayed at several SLH properties over the years, I am well aware that membership comes with high expectations, but also that the quality can vary considerably from one hotel to another. La Sultana proved to be a very distinctive experience, with clear strengths and a few noticeable shortcomings.
My stay began with a warm welcome and traditional Moroccan tea served in the lobby before I was guided through a maze of courtyards and stairways to my room. I stayed in a Deluxe Suite, which, like the rest of the hotel, featured an elaborate Moroccan design. The level of craftsmanship throughout the property is impressive, with carved wood, zellige tiles, antique doors, and countless small details that are rarely seen in modern hotels. While the style is not necessarily to my personal taste, I appreciated the authenticity and the care taken to preserve traditional design.
Service throughout the stay was very good, with genuinely friendly and attentive staff. The front office manager in particular stood out for being extremely professional, helpful, and kind, which had a very positive impact on the overall experience. Unfortunately, the food did not meet the same standard. Having dined in many excellent restaurants across Europe, I understand that comparisons are not always fair, but the dinner was disappointing even on its own merits. This was especially unfortunate, as most other aspects of the hotel worked very well. Breakfast, however, was much better, and I particularly enjoyed the local Moroccan tea, which was excellent. Internet access is complimentary, but it is limited to the public areas, which may be inconvenient for some guests.
Beyond the stay itself, La Sultana has an interesting background. The hotel is located at the southern edge of the Medina, close to the Royal Palace and within walking distance of many historical sites. It is made up of several adjoining riads that were restored over many years, retaining their original character while incorporating modern comforts. Each suite is different in size and layout, which adds to the feeling of staying in a private residence rather than a conventional hotel.
The rooftop terrace is one of the highlights, offering panoramic views over the Medina and, on clear days, the Atlas Mountains in the distance. There is also a spa with a traditional hammam, reflecting Morocco’s long-standing bathing and wellness traditions. The hotel places a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, history, and privacy, making it particularly appealing to travellers who value atmosphere and authenticity over contemporary luxury or fine dining.
Overall, La Sultana Marrakech offers a unique and characterful experience. It may not be unforgettable, but it certainly leaves an impression. For travellers seeking traditional Moroccan architecture, a peaceful location, and attentive service, it is well worth considering.
