Hotel Royal, Aarhus
Right in the center of Aarhus, you’ll find Hotel Royal Aarhus, which is one of the oldest hotels in the city. It’s located right by the cathedral and the main square, so you’re in a good location for exploring the city by foot. Shops, cafés, and the river are all within an easy walking distance, which makes it a really convenient place to stay.
The hotel first opened back in 1838, and it has a classical feel to it. Over the years, it has had all kinds of guests, including famous people and even members of royal families. Back then, it was a much bigger deal than most hotels, and it quickly became known as one of the main places to stay in Aarhus, which is the second biggest city in Denmark.
Aarhus is included in a list I have made of my top 100 favourite cities in the world. It is a great city with a lot of things to offer. One of the main things people check out is Den Gamle By, which is like walking straight into the past with old houses and people dressed up like they lived back then. It’s actually pretty fun, not just for history lovers.
If you’re more into art, there is ARoS Aarhus Art Museum. The rainbow walkway on top is well known, and it offer views of the city in addition to the art.
The city itself feels relaxed compared to many bigger cities. The Latin Quarter is another good spot, with small streets, cafés, and little shops.
If you want some nature, Marselisborg Forests is close by and good for a walk or bike ride. Overall, Aarhus just feels easy to enjoy without trying too hard.
When you walk inside Hotel Royal today, it doesn’t feel like a brand new hotel, and that’s kind of the point. It has an older style, with a lot of details that you don’t really see in modern buildings. At the same time, the rooms have been updated, so you still get the basic comfort you would expect. It’s sort of a mix between old and new, which some people really like.
One thing that stands out is the amount of art in the hotel. There are paintings and different artworks in parts of the hotel, not just in one room or area. The best part of the hotel is probably Queens Garden where I enjoyed a great breakfast during a short recent visit where I also spent some time in a couple of rooms. The breakfast buffet was impressive with a great selection of food in addition to the option of ordering freshly made food from the kitchen.
Over the years, the hotel has changed quite a bit. At one point, it even had things like entertainment spaces and restaurants that were popular in the city. Some of those things are gone now, but it shows that the place has tried to keep up with the times instead of staying exactly the same. The facilities include a gym, a sauna, a bar and a meeting room.
Overall, Hotel Royal Aarhus is an interesting historical hotel in a great location in a lovely city. It has a lot of history, and a different kind of atmosphere compared to newer places. The service is great with kind staff. I am thankful for the experience I had at Hotel Royal, a one-of-a-kind hotel in Aarhus.
