Flodigarry Hotel, Isle of Skye

Flodigarry Hotel is located on the northeastern coast of the Isle of Skye in Scotland, near the small village of Flodigarry. The hotel sits on a hillside overlooking the sea, with views across the water to the Outer Hebrides on clear days. Its remote location gives guests a quiet and peaceful setting, while still being within driving distance of Skye’s main roads and towns, including Portree, the island’s largest town.

The building itself is traditional and solid, reflecting the style of older Scottish inns. It has whitewashed walls, pitched roofs, and a simple, functional design. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a mix of traditional and modern furnishings. The focus is on making guests feel at home rather than impressing with luxury finishes or flashy decor.

Visiting the Isle of Skye was very exciting for me, and after my visit, I would rank it among the 100 best islands I have visited out of more than 400 total. I only stayed on the island for one night, and Flodigarry Hotel came up during research as one of the best hotels on the island. Flodigarry Hotel has 18 rooms in total, of which seven are located in the main house, most of which are small to medium in size. Rooms are straightforward, with beds, private bathrooms, and basic amenities such as tea and coffee-making facilities and Wi-Fi. Some rooms have views over the sea, while others look out over the surrounding hills or the hotel’s grounds. Larger family rooms are available, suitable for those travelling with children.

One of the hotel’s main strengths is its location. Sitting on the coast, it is surrounded by open countryside and offers direct access to walking routes along the cliffs and shoreline. Guests can easily explore the natural surroundings on foot, enjoying coastal paths, hills, and the quiet landscape that the Isle of Skye is known for. Wildlife can often be seen nearby, including seabirds, otters, and occasionally seals along the shore.

The hotel has a small bar and lounge area, which is the social hub of the property. The bar is casual and unpretentious, where guests can have a drink, chat with the staff, or relax in front of a fire on colder days. There is also a dining room where meals are served and provides views over the water on clear evenings.

Service at Flodigarry Hotel is friendly and approachable. Staff are helpful with information about local sights, walks, and driving routes. Because the hotel is smaller and more remote, guests can expect a personal touch, with staff taking the time to answer questions or offer advice on exploring the area. The friendly manager gave me great advice on where to go on the island, which was helpful. The service was very kind, and I appreciated the kind service I received from the staff during my short stay.

For visitors who want to see more of Skye, Flodigarry works well as a base for the northern part of the island. It is about a 30–40 minute drive from Portree, where shops, restaurants, and other services are available. From there, it is possible to access many of the island’s main attractions, including the Quiraing, Kilt Rock, and the Old Man of Storr. The hotel’s location on the northeast coast also makes it convenient for exploring less-visited parts of Skye, including Trotternish and some of the small villages along the A855 road.

Flodigarry Hotel is suitable for a range of travellers. It works for couples looking for a quiet stay with views of the sea, families wanting space to explore the outdoors, or solo travellers who value a peaceful setting. It is not a luxury property, and it does not have large conference or spa facilities. Instead, it focuses on providing a solid base for travellers exploring the Isle of Skye.

The hotel’s surroundings are particularly appreciated by people who enjoy outdoor activities. Walking routes are accessible directly from the hotel, and the coastline and nearby hills are ideal for short hikes or longer excursions. Birdwatchers and nature lovers often find the area rewarding, as there are opportunities to see seabirds, raptors, and marine life along the shore. In the summer months, the long daylight hours make it possible to spend most of the day outside exploring. The service was very kind, and I appreciated the kind service I received from the staff during my short stay.

Although the hotel is somewhat remote, it is reachable by car, and there is on-site parking for guests. Public transport in the area is limited, so driving is generally necessary to explore other parts of the island or visit nearby attractions. The nearest ferry connections to the mainland are at Armadale, about a 90-minute drive south, or Mallaig, which is further away.

In short, Flodigarry Hotel is not about luxury or high-end amenities. It is about location and being close to nature on one of Europe’s most exciting islands. Scotland is an exciting destination to visit, and of all the places I have visited there, the Isle of Skye is my new favourite.
