Cliff House Hotel

Cliff House Hotel joined Relais & Châteaux following its first year of operation as a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. That transition is interesting in itself, as the hotel still carries much of the contemporary spirit often associated with SLH rather than the more traditional, sometimes old-school style that defines many Relais & Châteaux properties.
My stay began with a pickup at the nearest bus stop, located around 20 kilometres away—a thoughtful and much-appreciated gesture given the hotel’s dramatic but remote coastal setting. The arrival was efficient rather than ceremonial, and I was personally welcomed by the general manager, Adriaan Bartels, who also escorted me to my room. This level of direct involvement felt unusually informal for Relais & Châteaux, but in a positive, sincere way.
The room itself reflected the hotel’s modern design language. Clean lines, muted tones and floor-to-ceiling windows made the most of the Atlantic views. The bathroom was the standout feature, with a walk-in rain shower and a freestanding bathtub positioned to enjoy the scenery. A large flat-screen television, a very comfortable bed and a handwritten welcome card added to the sense of care and attention.
In terms of design, Cliff House feels closer to an SLH property than a classic Relais & Châteaux, yet it clearly possesses charm—one of the organisation’s five core values. The setting alone, perched high above the sea, provides a sense of place that cannot be replicated. Unfortunately, the Michelin-starred restaurant was closed on the evening of my stay, so I dined at the hotel’s more casual restaurant instead. The food was good and competently executed, though naturally not comparable to a Michelin-level experience.
The hotel’s spa facilities are impressive, featuring a large indoor swimming pool and a calm, refined atmosphere that complements the surrounding landscape. Service throughout the stay was friendly and professional without being overly formal. Overall, Cliff House Hotel is a beautiful property in a truly stunning location and one I can highly recommend including on a trip to Ireland.
