Six Senses Douro Valley: A Unique Experience

Six Senses is a collection of hotels, resorts and spas, and is perhaps my number one favourite hotel chain because of its eco-friendly concept, design, service and overall experience. Six Senses Douro Valley is a stunning 57-room hotel set in a UNESCO World Heritage setting. Douro Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its breathtaking landscapes, terraced vineyards, and the meandering Douro River. I stayed in a beautiful room with a rain shower, double sinks and an ultra-comfortable bed, in fact, one of the best I have ever slept in anywhere in the world.

Comparing this Six Senses with other of their properties I have stayed in, two significant differences come to mind. My room at this Portuguese property was smaller, but the food was better. By far the best of any Six Senses property I have stayed. A lot of effort has been made in their breakfast buffet with an egg station, while the dinner was Michelin-comparable without being fine dining. Mushroom risotto and icecream are two of the tastiest dishes in the world when made right, and they definitely did it, even better than I expected.

The facilities included a lovely Six Senses spa with an indoor swimming pool, different kinds of steam and a sauna. The service was very impressive, and I was surprised to see the high amount of staff at the property. Six Senses has undoubtedly put in a lot of effort in securing an excellent experience for their guest. As a result, I rank this as one of the few hotels I have ranked as a fantastic experience, as it is just that.

My opinion: Fantastic experience.
